About Luke

Luke Dawes

Meet the Man Behind the Cabinets

Luke Dawes didn’t set out to start a business. His story begins like many others in small-town America—just a kid with a love for video games. Growing up in a working-class family, Luke spent his free time at the local pizza joint, putting every quarter he had into arcade cabinets, learning the ins and outs of every game he could find.

The Path Through Tech

But for Luke, gaming wasn’t just about playing. He was fascinated by how these machines worked. By his teens, he was buying broken cabinets and restoring them, turning his garage into a mini arcade. With money earned from odd jobs and a few lucky garage sale finds, he eventually had enough machines to make his childhood dream feel a little closer.

Before opening Dawes Arcade, Luke briefly worked at larger tech companies, fixing systems and gaining technical experience. He even dipped his toes into software development, learning about how games were made from the inside. Though the work gave him valuable skills, the corporate world didn’t feel right. He missed the hands-on approach and the real connection to games that had always inspired him.

A Dream Takes Shape

In 1982, with some savings and help from family, Luke took a leap and opened Dawes Arcade. It was small—a handful of second-hand machines, a fridge stocked with soda, and not much else. But the neighborhood kids came, drawn to the charm of Luke’s humble arcade. He created a space where they felt welcome, where anyone could drop by and have fun, no matter how little money they had in their pockets.

A Place for Everyone

Dawes Arcade quickly became more than just a local hangout; it became a fixture in the neighborhood. Luke knew everyone by name, always ready with a smile or a conversation about the latest high score. He organized Friday night tournaments and hosted birthday parties where the focus wasn’t on winning, but on having fun.

The Heart of the Arcade

Dawes Arcade wasn’t just a business to Luke—it was part of the community. He knew the kids who came through the door, and they knew him. It became a place where families felt comfortable dropping by, where friends made memories, and where everyone had a shot at a high score.

Luke’s dedication to his arcade and the people who filled it made Dawes Arcade more than just a collection of games. It became a special part of the town—a place where the lights, the sounds, and the thrill of the games brought people together.
